Small Office & the Big Office

November 28th, 2007 by Sach

Is life about working? Or is working about life?  Well, I think the latter is certainly true, work is apart of life, but I’m not too sure about the first question.  My gut tells me “no”, life is more than work! But then if I look at the world around me I often doubt this judgment.

I see people around me living to work - and in this I see nothing wrong!  The question is what kind of work are they living for? Most people I know and see work in access of 9 hours a day, travel for 2 hours a day - thats 11 hours of a 24 hour cycle gone!  So around 48% of the day is working - working for what? Well, most of us work for corporations that amount to little more than consumerism - all of which is necessary to turn the giant cogs of the economy, but is it really worth turning our lives into little more than cogs in a giant machine?

Personally, Greed doesn’t motivate me, materialism is something I’d rather not get a taste off.  I’d rather be a spirit of a different kind - or at the very least, try to be one! I’d rather live, and work only on things that makes ALL our existence that little bit better - no matter how little. I see life as more than working, a career, academics or the amount you earn! Instead life is self growth, self improvement, travel, exploring, understanding our nature, why are we the way we are?

And so every now and then - I’ll step out of the small office of Wecomeone, which sometimes I forget, and think its the most important thing in my life.

Then I’ll step into the Big Office - the World. I’ll grab my rucksack, drop everything and go wondering! Even if its for only a day or a few hours. Spending time in the big office, I find more exhilarating,  I find it tremendously energizing and allows me to see the big wide expanses of life without the restrictions of the 4 walls at my Wecomeone Office!

When I do get back into the small office -  it’s always somehow different.  Its always lighter, and more relaxed, I feel a certain depth in it, and it somehow gains more meaning from the bigger office outside!  The Big Office seems to be my source of inspiration and motivation, and small office is my way of dis-charging that energy into something useful! I like it.  Its nice to know what the Bigger Office is for, and how to use all our smaller ones!

Life is good, if only we know how to live it!

Recycling by Numbers

November 24th, 2007 by Weco

It’s fairly common to recycle these days. I think everyone knows how to.

So lets focus on the basics. What do those symbols on plastic products mean? … Symbols… What Symbols?

Ahh these symbols. The letters below the triangle (PETE, HDPE…) represent the type of plastic. The numbers refer to how common it is recycled.

Well… PETE (PET, or just no. 1) is commonly used as plastic bottles (for drinks, mouthwash etc.) as well as microwavable food trays.

When recycled, we can use it for fibre for carpet and even fleece jackets!

PVC (no. 3) can be used for blood bags or even window frames. When recycled, it can be used to make traffic cones, garden hoses and many more.

The whole ‘recycling by numbers’ prevents plastics from mixing as they are recycled (thats why seeing 4 bins at a time seems puzzling!).

I do remember a similar situation in Berlin Airport with 4 bins!

Be That Change That Society Needs

November 22nd, 2007 by Weco

Most of us take each day as it comes. We eat. We work. We watch TV. We Talk and we sleep. However aren’t there gaps in between these?

There are activities which fill in the gaps.

Voluntary work (Basically do something for nothing!)

Spend time with someone from a different generation

Learn to be friendly in another generation

Turn off unneccessary lights (both in your daily life and practically)

Write to someone who has inspired you

I think Friedrich Engels sums this up perfectly,

“An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory”

 - Friedrich Engels.

Bears…What Bears?

November 15th, 2007 by Weco

Bears are best seen as a child’s toy, in cartoons or in most cases, based in a natural habitat. How about 3/4 of those threatened due to extinction?

New research indicates this. Whether its Grizzlys, Pandas or the Polar, it’s clear that bears are under threat.

The Asiatic Black Bear (as shown) has been affected due to increased logging; Therefore a loss of habitat, as well as a loss of a natural wild habitat. The push for more road networks and hydro-power stations have affected their homes.

Hunting and a demand for chinese medicine have damaged the breeding of these mammals.

This is just one of many types of Bears that face extinction. We all know about the melting ice caps, but how about deforestation and the capturing of these animals for consumer related matters?

The links below provide more information on what we can do to help.

The Marxian Armchair

November 13th, 2007 by Weco

Its a fairly cold evening. Lucky for me I’m in the warm library. Sitting in a corner surrounded by books. Taking cover I Lay back in my chair and wonder… Despite around 1200 words into an essay, a beard which Marx would have been proud of, wondering what I’m going to write in the blog and why exactly I’m in the library at this time. A customer service announcement calls.

Ohh well, looks like I need a break from the much inspiring Karl Marx and write something in this blog!

The Picture Game

November 9th, 2007 by Weco

So lets play the picture game. What do these 4 animals all have in common? Any guesses?

Well… some may already know, but you may find these animals in products you would not expect.

Picture 1: A Sheep. Yes they are widely eaten. Their wool is used for a variety of products. However, Lanolin (or wool grease) is used in facial creams (notably Oil of Olay) and many shoe polishes.

Picture 2: A Cow. Again eaten very widely. I’d class the Cow as a peaceful mammal. How about Rennet (Cow’s stomach lining) used in cheeses? Seems very odd but its true in some cases.

Picture 3: The Beetle. Sorry not the best looking out of the 4. When crushed its red dye, E120 (or Carmine), is rumoured to be used in Smarties. Not entirely sure what the manufacturer’s stance is at the present moment.

Picture 4: A Fish. I wanted to find a cool picture to make it a little more interesting. Ohh… and one that reminded me of Fanta. Why? Because Fanta contains Fish Gelatine. It doesn’t say it on the can but it’s true.

I hope you enjoyed this installment. My advise would be to check the ingredients on the label, or just completely boycott the company.

I also apologise those who may be eating or using some cosmetics. These ideas are ethical and important to raise.
